The prognosis for astrocytoma patients is largely dependent on the grade of the tumor, explains Cancer Research UK. While grade 1 astrocytomas are easily removed and may never return, most patients with a grade 4 tumor survive less than one year, with roughly 6 percent alive after five years.
More than 40 percent of people diagnosed with a grade 2 astrocytoma are alive 10 years after diagnosis, according to Cancer Research UK. Among patients with a grade 3 astrocytoma, studies indicate that roughly 27 percent live for at least five years.
Though low-grade astrocytomas, stages 1 and 2, tend to progress slowly, high-grade tumors, stages 3 and 4, grow at a rapid pace and require special treatment, explains the American Brain Tumor Association.
