As of March 2015, the five-year relative survival rates for localized, regional stage and distant spread sarcomas are 83 percent, 54 percent and 16 percent, respectively, according to the American Cancer Society. The patient's age, site of the tumor, type of sarcoma and treatment received also affect the final outlook.
Sarcoma is an uncommon type of malignant tumor that grows from different types of tissues, such as muscles or bones, explains the American Cancer Society. The two primary types of sarcoma are bone sarcomas, such as osteosarcoma, and soft tissue sarcomas, such as angiosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, malignant mesenchymoma and adult fibrosarcoma.
