Where does teak grow?

The teak tree, known by the scientific name Tectona grandis, is native to Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Myanmar. It can be cultivated in any tropical environment, and is grown in areas of South America, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa for its valuable hardwood.

Teak wood is valuable for its water resistance and general durability. The hardwood has a significant oil content, rendering it resistant to rot and decay. Its high tensile strength makes it useful for flooring, counter tops and cutting boards. The weather-resistant properties of teak make it a good wood for outdoor furniture and flooring, in addition to boat construction.
