Beginning after midnight on the first Friday in August and ending at 11:59 p.m. the following Sunday, the state of Tennessee exempts the sale of certain items from taxation, according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue. The tax holiday is aimed at increasing "back-to-school" shopping, explains The Tennessean.
As of 2015, Tennessee's sales tax holiday applies to the purchase of apparel or school supplies under $100 per item, as well as the purchase of a computer under $1,500 in value, reports The Tennessean. Items such as jewelry, handbags and sports equipment are not included in the tax exemption. The tax exemption also applies to purchases made online.
