After whipple surgery, most patients need to recover in the hospital for eight to 10 days and eat only small amounts of bland food at a time. They may have digestive problems for two to three months and could experience weight loss, according to WebMD.

Some complications are possible as a result of the whipple procedure, claims Mayo Clinic. These include leaking of pancreatic juices and development of diabetes. Because whipple surgery involves removing the head of the pancreas in those who have cancerous tumors, difficulties related to cancer treatment can also arise.

If doctors determine that a patient is a good candidate for minimally invasive surgery, they can perform a laporoscopic procedure instead of the standard whipple. Laporoscopic surgery has a lower risk of complications, notes Johns Hopkins Medicine.
