The Arctic Ocean touches North America, Asia and Europe. The ocean lies in the Northern Hemisphere and sits predominately north of the Arctic Circle.
The Arctic Ocean includes a number of tributaries, including the Greenland Sea, East Siberian Sea, Barents Bay, Hudson Bay and Baffin Bay. The ocean connects to the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The ocean's size is 5,427,000 square miles, which is roughly the size of Russia and 1.5 times the size of the United States. The Arctic Ocean's coastline is approximately 28,200 miles long. The ocean consistently harbors large quantities of sea ice and is extremely difficult to navigate by boat during the winter months.
