Vestal Goodman's funeral took place on January 1, 2004. Over 1,000 people attended her memorial service at the Christ Church in Nashville, Tennessee, including fellow musicians George Jones, Vince Gill and Amy Grant.

Goodman was born in 1929 in Fyffe, Alabama and passed away on December 27, 2003 due to influenza complications which occurred during a trip to Florida with her family. Although her original aspiration in early life was to become a Metropolitan Opera singer, her upbringing in the church led her to seek a career in gospel music. Her prominence in the Southern Gospel genre led to her being named "The Queen of Southern Gospel Music" in a variety of magazines.
