The male elephant's reproductive organ is a penis. An elephant's penis is independently mobile and up to 39 inches long. Its testicles are within the body cavity near the kidneys. Its reproductive system also includes the seminal vesicles, the sperm storage organ, the prostate, the ampullae and the bulbourethral glands.

Elephants usually mate during the wet season. Females have a well-defined heat cycle and signal receptiveness in their urine and vaginal secretions. Pregnancy lasts about two years and usually results in a single calf, which is dependent on its mother during its first two years of life. Male elephants reach sexual maturity at age 9 while females reach the same stage at age 14 or 15.
