What is the capital of Latvia?

The capital of Latvia is Riga. With a population of 701,977 in 2014, Riga is also the country's largest city, as well as the largest city in any of the Baltic States.

Riga became the capital of Latvia when it first declared independence on Nov. 18, 1918, in the wake of World War I. After its occupation by Soviet forces in World War II, Riga remained the capital, but the Soviet government deported many of its native residents to Siberia and began to colonize the city with ethnic Russians. When Latvia declared independence from the USSR on Aug. 21, 1991, Riga remained the capital of the country.
