The liver is located in the abdominal cavity under the diaphragm. It spans the width of the abdomen; however, the majority of the liver's mass lies on the right side of the body.
The liver sits above the gallbladder, intestines and pancreas. It plays an essential role in the digestion of food. Roughly triangular in shape, the liver weighs approximately 3 pounds and consists of four lobes. After the skin, the liver is the human body's second largest organ and the largest gland. The liver filters blood after it has passed through the digestive tract at a rate of about 1.5 quarts per minute. One of the body's vital organs, a functioning liver is essential for human life.
