Gouverneur Morris wrote the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, as well as several sections of the document. He has been nicknamed the "Penman of the Constitution" for his stylistic flourishes. He was one of the 39 signatories of the document at the Constitutional Convention of 1787.

Morris was born in New York City in 1752 to Lewis and Sarah Morris, wealthy landowners in the city. His first name came from his mother's maiden name, and indicated his maternal Huguenot origins. He studied law at King's College, receiving a Master's degree in 1771. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Morris served as a representative in the New York State Assembly. His legislative prowess earned him a seat at the Continental Congress of 1778.
