The capital of the United States is Washington D.C. In 1790, Congress established a territory called the District of Columbia to be the permanent home of the federal government. Within that territory, the city of Washington was built.
The District of Columbia is not part of any state, but both Virginia and Maryland donated land in order to form the district. The city of Washington is named in honor of the first U.S. President, George Washington. In 2013, Washington was the 23rd most populous city in the country, although the metropolitan area had a population of 5.8 million, making it the seventh-most populated metropolitan area in the country.
