According to the Weather Channel, Mount Waialeale on the Hawaiian island of Kauai receives about 450 inches of annual rainfall, making it the rainiest part of the country and one of the rainiest in the world. In the Hawaiian language, the name literally means "rippling water."
The mountain lies in the center of the northernmost main Hawaiian island and peaks at 5,148 feet. Its round, conical shape exposes all sides of its summit to moisture-heavy winds, and the mountain's steep cliffs cause the humid air to rise more than 3,000 feet in less than one-half mile, dropping a large portion of rain in the same area between 330 and 360 days each year.
