When does the Super Bowl take place each year?

The Super Bowl takes place on the first Sunday in February. This scheduling tradition began in 2004. Previously, the Super Bowl generally took place in January.
Over the years, the National Football League season grew longer, and more teams were added to the playoffs. This led to more rounds and pushing back the Super Bowl, which is essentially the final round of the playoffs. The very first Super Bowl was held Jan. 15, 1967, when only four teams participated in the playoffs. Some also attribute the timing of the Super Bowl to a synergy with television's sweeps month, which sweetens the pot for advertising contracts.
