It is recommended that women receive their first pelvic examination at 21 years of age, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. An initial visit to a gynecologist for a general exam is suggested between the ages of 13 and 15 years.
An internal exam consists of checking the cervix and vaginal walls for sexually transmitted diseases and completing a pap smear for abnormalities, details KidsHealth.
Pap smear tests are recommended from 21 to 65 years of age, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pap tests are internal exams that test for cervical cancers and are generally performed every three years.
